Protegeles’ first aim is to make of Internet a safer place for children and to spread among the youngsters a safer and responsible use of the ICT.

Always aiming at this objective, Protegeles organises and participates in all activities promoting a safer use of Internet, especially awareness-raising campaigns addressed to children themselves but also educators and parents.  At the same time, Protegeles is especially interested in launching informative and communication campaigns in the media so as to reach the general public.

Moreover, Protegeles is the Spanish awareness node within the European INSAFE network.   Both Protegeles’ activities as the awareness node for a safe use of Internet and the European INSAFE network itself are directly promoted and co-financed by the European Commission.

The following are some of the tasks undergone by Protegeles within the SafenetII project:

  • Designing and launching informative campaigns covering all the Spanish national territory and mainly addressed to the education field: children, the most important target public of our campaigns, but also teachers and parents.
  • Editing educative materials to be distributed in our campaigns, no matter the campaign is going to be developed in schools or in other places; for instance, our periodical magazine CONECTATE( Get Connected)
  • To accomplish detailed surveys and studies about the Spanish children habits and ways of using Internet and other ICT so that we can locate and inform parents, educators and the general public about the risks to which children are exposed and that we find out through these surveys.  Surveys also allow us to define which aspects deserve to be subject of an awareness-raising campaign.
  • Launching purpose-built campaigns about a specific aspect of our work, such as a safe use of Internet, mobile phones, digital entertainment (videogames), etc.
  • Designing and launching educative campaigns targeting a specific public, such as teachers.
  • Organising or taking part in big events or workshops.
  • Organising and promoting, together with the rest of the European INSAFE awareness nodes, the Safer Internet Day.
  • Keeping a continuous presence in the media to inform the Spanish society about children’s safety on Internet.
  • Designing and editing promotional and merchandising material of our campaigns.
  • Designing and creating thematic webpages: on videogames www.guiavideojuegos.es, for our campaign about the cybercentres www.cibercentroamigo.com, to serve as support to our campaign about Internet safety www.exprimelared.com, for parents or educators www.enlaredprotegete.com and www.ciberfamilias.com
  • Designing and creating Internet contents suitable for children as well as safe websites and spaces (www.portaldelmenor.es)
  • Protegeles has found many websites supporting and promoting some behaviours that are particularly harmful for young people.  Given this situation, Protegeles has opened and is running several helplines which main aim is to offer professional help to school bullying victims (www.acosoescolar.info) or  to youngsters suffering from an Eating Disorder, that is, anorexia nervosa o bulimia nervosa (www.anaymia.com, www.anaymia.eu and www.masqueunaimagen.com).
